Volume and Surface Area

This week we are covering Volume and Surface Area of three-dimensional shapes.  We will be taking notes in our math journal and I do have copies if you are absent. I have also copied extra STAAR Math Charts that you can pick up in the classroom.

Below are some videos that can be found on Khan Academy and you can do a 3-2-1 Response for Extra Credit. I must see 3 sentences of what you learned, 2 sentences on questions you still have and 1 sentence on something that stuck with you.  WITHOUT COMPLETE SENTENCES you will NOT get credit!

This Thursday we will be having a Volume and Surface Area Quiz. I will also be checking math journals for the Volume and Surface Area notes. These two things will be the last grades for the Six Weeks.  Report cards will go home next week.

Recent Sightings

Last week our bellringer included a lot of Percent Increase and Percent Decrease problems.  Please continue to work on these at home as they are crucial.  Make sure you fully read the problem and use your strategies to see what it is looking for.  Below you will find some of the bellringer problems worked out to help you.

On Flex Day, one of the stations in my classroom was called "Close to 100".  This activity provided numeracy practice for students and the goal was to make two two-digit numbers reach as close to 100 as possible.  There is an online game that you can play to work on these numeracy skills at home and you can find it here.

Pythagorean Theorem Practice

Just a reminder that your Pythagorean Theorem Practice assignment is due tomorrow in class.  We went over this today and worked a few together as well as drew and labeled the pictures. I have shared these below for your reference.

Also the Did You Hear About Puzzle Sheet is due tomorrow as well.  We will have some time in class to work on it but you will not have enough to do the entire assignment so get a head start and work on it at home.

Pythagorean Theorem and Notebook Check

This week we will be discussing the Pythagorean Theorem, which is an idea that came from the ancient Greeks about the right triangle.

The basic principle behind this idea is that if a triangle has a right angle and you made a square on each of the three sides, then the biggest square has the exact same area as the other two squares put together.

Here’s a right triangle.  The hypotenuse is the longest side of the triangle.

This week, please take the time to watch the following videos to assist you with your learning of Pythagorean Theorem. This concept builds upon the Square Roots that we learned today and will be something that you will truly love to work out because they are so easy!

Square Roots Practice...

 Students working hard together to Estimate Square Roots!  Using the Perfect Squares Chart and combining minds are always great!

For a review on how to find the square root of a decimal, look at the notes above.  Click on the picture if you need it to be bigger.  I thought this might help some of you as you are finishing your Estimating Square Roots homework tonight.

Moving right along we are starting irrational numbers. Please take the time to watch the following videos before class:

These are a new concept and will be somewhat tricky. I gave a Perfect Squares handout that you will put in your comp book/spiral to keep handy!  I suggest you memorize the first 25 squares (HINT! HINT!).

Homework tonight is to complete the Glencoe Square Roots Practice problems.  There are 24 questions and you will need to use your notes from your comp book!

Welcome back!

Welcome back to CMS for our second semester! We are starting off fast and furious as we only have 55 days left before the upcoming STAAR test!  That does mean only 43 days of seeing each other due to the one day a week.  We have so much to cover in so little time.

This week we are reviewing units from the first semester and doing group work in class on different topics.  On Friday we will be presenting these in class.  I have given a rubric for this assignment and will be giving two separate grades.

We are also covering Technical Reading Strategies to solve problems to prepare for the STAAR test.  Tomorrow I will post a strategy checklist for you to use at home.

Tonight's homework: Gather information about your topic and bring into class on Thursday.
