More Proportion Help

WKU stands for Word Ratio, Known Ratio Unknown Ratio.  Using this method when solving proportion problems will help make sure that you set up equivalent ratios that will make sense as you Cross Multiply an Divide.

The word problem states "The Rangers scored 3 runs in the first inning.  If they continue at this rate, how many runs will be scored in the entire game without any overtime?"  After we read through the problem, we go through and circle the words that we are comparing, in this case runs and innings. This is our WORD ratio.  We then continue to read the problem to find our KNOWN ratio, in this case 3 runs in 1 inning.  We have to use what we know about baseball to know that a regular game has 9 innings and we are trying to find the number of runs in those 9 innings.  To do this we place a variable in the UNKNOWN ratio.  We then cross-multiply and divide to find our answer of 27 runs in 9 innings.

Here you can also watch a video of me reviewing this with one of my STAAR Classes.  Enjoy! Leave me a comment! :)

  2. Thank you so much for this idea! I used it with my 6th grade math classes today and at least 90% of them were able to make the chart and find the missing variable on their first try!! I am going to check out your TpT store and will definitely be purchasing some of your ideas! Is there a way you use the WKU with similar figures and proportions?
